Do I need a permit if the skip is on my driveway?

No, you do not need a permit if your skip is placed entirely on your private driveway. Permits are only necessary when skips are placed on public land.

What counts as public land for a skip?

Public land includes roads, pavements, nature strips, and any other land owned by the local council. If your skip will be on any of these, a permit is necessary.

How much does a skip permit cost?

The cost of a skip permit in Waltham Forest can vary, but it typically ranges from £30 to £60. It's always a good idea to check with the local council or Sortera for the most current pricing.

How long does a skip permit last?

A skip permit generally lasts for one to two weeks. If your project requires more time, you may need to request an extension.

Can I extend my skip permit if my project runs over?

Yes, you can often extend your skip permit if needed. However, additional fees may apply. It's best to contact Sortera to handle the extension process for you.

Where do I get a skip hire permit from in Waltham Forest?

Who actually applies for the skip permit - me or the skip company?

Sortera usually takes care of the entire permit application process for you. However, this is not always the case, and it varies depending on the local authority. Once you have ordered your skip and you've confirmed it will need a road permit, we'll be in touch about the additional permit cost.

Is the cost of a skip hire permit included in the price of my skip?

The price of the skip hire permit is not included and is charged separately. We will contact you to discuss this further if you think you need a permit.

How much notice do I need to give to get a permit?

It’s advisable to apply for a skip permit at least a week before you need the skip. This allows enough time for approval and to accommodate any unforeseen delays.

Can I put a skip on the pavement if it leaves room for walkers?

No, placing a skip on the pavement is not allowed, even if it leaves space for pedestrians. A skip must be placed on the road or a driveway with an appropriate permit.

Do I need a permit for a builders bag?

Builders bags usually do not require a permit if they are kept on private property. However, placing them on public land will require a permit just like a traditional skip.

What is a CPZ / Parking Bay suspension fee?

A Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) or Parking Bay suspension fee is charged if the skip will be placed in a regulated parking area. This fee is separate from the permit cost.

What are the safety rules for a roadside skip?

Roadside skips must be clearly visible and well-lit if placed overnight. They should be positioned with the open end facing oncoming traffic and not obstruct access for emergency or service vehicles.

What happens if I put a skip on the road without a permit?

Placing a skip on the road without a valid permit is illegal and may result in hefty fines. It's always better to secure a permit to avoid legal troubles.

What skip sizes are allowed on a public highway?

Generally, skips up to 8 yards are allowed on public highways, provided they adhere to safety and location regulations. Check with Sortera for guidance on suitable skip sizes for your area.

Can my neighbour use my skip if it's on the road with a permit?

No. Legally, the skip belongs to the person who hired it, and fly-tipping into someone else's skip is illegal. Because it's on public land, people often try it, which is why locked or enclosed skips are recommended for busy residential streets.

Does a permit give me the right to block my neighbour’s driveway or light?

No, a permit does not allow you to block access to your neighbour’s driveway or impede light to their property. Skips must be positioned considerately and legally. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, don't forget to check with your respective councils. If you're ready to arrange hassle-free skip hire, contact Sortera for assistance and ensure a smooth process from start to finish.
