What Materials Can & Can't Go in one our Skips?
Construction materials, such as bricks, timber offcuts, concrete, and plasterboard, can be disposed of in a skip.
It’s helpful to keep different types of materials grouped together and separate from general rubbish, which makes handling and recycling easier.
Breaking down larger pieces can also make the most of the skip’s space.
Most everyday household rubbish can go in a skip, from unwanted clutter to old furniture and general domestic waste.
The main things to leave out are hazardous materials such as paint, chemicals, batteries, gas canisters or asbestos, as these need to be handled and charged separately for safety reasons.
Other items classed as hazardous items not permitted in a general skip include:
- Asbestos
- Sofas
- Any upholstered furniture
- Oily waste
- Fridges and freezers
- Pressurized gas bottles,
- TVs or computer monitors
- Fluorescent tubes
- Tyres
- Liquids
The list is not exhaustive and if you are unsure, please contact us on 033 0094 4944.
Plasterboard must always be kept completely separate from all other waste, as it can’t be mixed with general rubbish or construction materials.
It should be disposed of in its own dedicated plasterboard skip, with sheets stacked neatly to make handling easier.
Any damaged, painted, or contaminated boards may also require special disposal procedures depending on local regulations.
Stone and rubble can be placed in a skip, including bricks, concrete and paving slabs. It’s best to break larger pieces into smaller chunks to make the skip easier to fill.
Keep in mind that heavy materials like stone can add significant weight, so it’s important not to overload the skip.
Wood can usually go in a skip, including old furniture, timber offcuts and untreated wood.
It’s best to keep it separate from general waste and avoid treated or painted wood if possible, as these may need special disposal.
Properly sorted wood can often be recycled or reused.
Bricks can be disposed of in a skip, including broken or whole bricks from construction or demolition.
It’s helpful to keep them separate from other waste and break up any large pieces to make loading easier. Bricks are heavy, so care should be taken not to overload the skip.
Hardcore, including crushed concrete, rubble, and construction leftovers, can be thrown into a skip.
Larger pieces should be broken down to make filling easier, and it’s a good idea to keep it separate from lighter waste. Because it’s very heavy, skips should not be overloaded.
Scrap metal can be placed in a skip, including items like old pipes, scrap panels, and metal fittings.
It’s best to keep different types of metal together and separate from general waste to make recycling easier. Metals are heavy, so care should be taken not to overload the skip.
If you have a TV, Fridge or Freezer, please call us on 033 0094 4944.
Due to the nature of their contents, Paint Tins are classed as hazardous items by law, and so unfortunately are not permitted to be placed in a general skip.
Separate arrangements can be made with us if you have any hazardous waste. Please contact us for further guidance on 033 0094 4944.
General rubbish or household garbage can be put into a skip, covering everyday waste like packaging, old clothes, and unwanted items.
It’s best to keep it separate from heavier or hazardous materials. Regular sorting helps make disposal easier and keeps the skip safe to handle.
Yes, you can usually put garden waste such as grass cuttings, leaves, branches, weeds and small amounts of soil in a skip.
Just avoid anything hazardous, overly heavy like large tree stumps, or items such as treated wood, which may need different disposal.
Garden waste is typically recyclable, so keeping it separate from general rubbish can make disposal easier.
