How to Load a Skip Efficiently (and Safely)

Loading a skip seems simple but doing it efficiently and safely can save you time, money, and a lot of frustration. Here’s how to load your skip like a pro:

1. Start With the Big, Heavy Items

Bulky waste like furniture, bricks, rubble, or timber should go in first. This creates a level base, prevents small items from taking up all the space, and ensures the skip remains stable once filled. Break down bulky items whenever possible.

2. Fill the Space Methodically

Think of loading a skip like playing Tetris, the tighter the fit, the more you can get in. Lay flat items at the bottom, stack objects neatly, and avoid large gaps between items to maximise capacity.

3. Put Lighter Items on Top

Once the heavy waste is in place, lighter waste like cardboard, plastics, or packaging can sit safely on top. Avoid placing lightweight items at the bottom where they’ll compress and waste room.

4. Keep the Weight Evenly Distributed

Uneven loading makes collection difficult and can cause safety issues. Spread out heavy materials so one side of the skip isn’t overloaded.

5. Don’t Overfill the Skip

Anything sticking out above the fill line cannot legally be transported. Overfilled skips may be refused, incur extra charges, or pose safety risks. If you’re running out of room, Sortera can arrange a larger skip or an additional collection.

6. Avoid Prohibited Items
