FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any additional Skip Hire charges that I should be aware of?

It is rare that additional charges are applied over and above the agreed standard published rates unless there has been a breach of your skip hire terms and conditions. The following circumstances are where charges may apply:
• Incorrect or undeclared waste types in your skip
• Permit Charges (non-refundable)
• Wasted journey charges
• Unnecessary waiting time charges (Assessed on a case specific basis)
• Additional tonnage over agreed levels

Do I need a permit to have a skip?

Permits are required by most local councils for skips that need to be placed on public land or public roads.
In most cases we will be able to arrange a permit for you and permits can be arranged for a maximum period of 28 days.
Some councils require that you, rather than Sortera, apply for the permit. Call us on 0330 0 944 944 and we can advise you if it something you need to do based on your location.
If your skip is to be placed on a road, Parking Bay suspensions will be required if there is a residential or business parking bay outside the building or location you want to put your skip.
Not sure of the council for the location of the skip? You can check here: https://www.gov.uk/find-licences/apply-skip-permit

Can I put electrical items such as a TV, Fridge or Freezer into the skip?

If you have a TV, Fridge or Freezer, please call us on 0330 0 944 944. Other items classed as hazardous items not permitted in a general skip include:

  • Asbestos
  • Sofas
  • Any upholstered furniture
  • Oily waste
  • Fridges and freezers
  • Pressurized gas bottles,
  • TVs or computer monitors
  • Fluorescent tubes

  • Liquids

The list is not exhaustive and if you are unsure, please contact us on 0330 0 944 944.

Can Paint Tins go into the skip?

Due to the nature of their contents, Paint Tins are classed as hazardous items by law, and so unfortunately are not permitted to be placed in a general skip.
Separate arrangements can be made with us if you have any hazardous waste. Please contact us for further guidance on 0330 0 944 944.

Can you drop the Skip on the roadside?

Yes we can, but only when the necessary permits have been obtained. Skips will not be placed on public property without a valid permit / parking bay suspension from the relevant council.

Do I need to be home to sign for my Skip?

We appreciate you may be busy and so no, you do not need to be home for us to deliver your skip. Simply leave location instructions when placing your order and we place as requested (if possible) – subject to any necessary permits being obtained in advance.

Do you deliver Skip Hire to my area?

Please use our Postcode Checker Tool to determine if we can deliver a skip to you.

Do you offer a wait and load service?

Yes, we offer a wait and load service. It costs the same as hiring a skip, and the first 15 minutes waiting time are included in the cost. Any waiting after this will be liable for additional charges.

Do you offer enclosed Skips or Skips with lids?

Yes, both enclosed skips and skips with lids are available on certain size skips. These types of skips are very popular and are limited in quantity, so we would advise booking at your earliest opportunity.

How much space do I need for Skip Hire delivery?

Your skip will be delivered by one of our modern fleet of skip lorries and we need an area 2.9 metres (9ft 6inches) wide for a normal truck with a 6 cubic yard skip to make a safe delivery

Once you have placed your order, we will be in touch by phone to run through your booking details, which will include the location of the skip. Please make us aware of any access difficulties you think we may face on the call, as it is really important that there is sufficient access to allow your skip in and out of its location safely.

If you are unsure, please contact us and we can provide you with the approximate dimensions required on 0330 0 944 944.

What access requirements are needed for Skip Hire?

We are sure you will understand that we would need written disclaimer from you should you require us to lift one of skips over any obstacles that are likely to become damaged.

We need a minimum of 10ft in width and 22ft in height access and must be able to reverse on to the property. If your skip is being left on the road, we need a minimum of 3 car lengths.
